Title: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 21 April, 2012, 06:01:38 PM
(http://www.volcom-mapping.com/hlmaps/screenshots/chronicles/chronicles_banner.png)

Name is not final btw.

So initially I wanted to create a campaign that directly tied in with the Cry of Fear storyline, like an "alternate" storyline of some sort. After realizing that this task could be considerably difficult, I decided to take another approach. This new campaign would exist in the same universe of the Single Player campaign, but indirectly. Chronicles takes place during the time that Simon is writing his book, as instructed by Doctor Purnell. While the main game elaborates on the story that Simon wrote, I am making this campaign with the assumption that Simon also wrote about other "episodes" and hallucinations that he had while he was recording his thoughts and experiences. Chronicles will elaborate on these visions.

It being a chronicles means that none of the chapters (or at least most of them) will be directly connected per se. The way I am planning to piece all of them together is through the use of a "hub". The beginning of the story takes place in Simon's home. It is not the same house used in Cry of Fear but is a house that is closely modeled after my own home. Different parts of the house will serve as portals to the hallucinations that Simon wrote about in his book. (As you may be able to tell, I was inspired by Silent Hill 4: The Room for this one).

As of right now the house is pretty much done, with just normal mapping and some misc details being left. I will do my best to work on this campaign as often as I can. I LOVE horror games, and grew up with all the classics (RE, Silent Hill etc). With Cry of Fear I can make a horror game of my own! Anyway, enjoy the pictures I've got to offer so far, and please note that they are not final.

INTRODUCTION
Quote
One more word. One more sentence. One more page. All those doctors ever told me was to keep writing this damn book. Ever since the "accident", I've been holed up in my room. I just can't stand it, the musty stench of the air, the monotonous flicking of my pen, the ringing in my ears. It's all driving me insane.

What more is there to live for? No one wants a cripple, a worthless one at that. I guess that's why I write this book. My story, my thoughts, my experiences... and hopefully, my ending.

Here starts another chapter, a long, dark, and twisted journey through the rest of my miserable life.

Looks neat! A cool twist would be to have you play as wheelchair Simon while in the hub and then 'turn into' Book Simon when you play an episode. If you do you'll need to remove some chairs  :joebiden:

Let me know if you need some custom voice over done too, I'll gladly help ^^

but about the mod, the levels are looking really good so far and the story seems interesting. Can't wait to play this, also about the title. You should just call it "Simon's Book"..the chronicles part just sounds gay  :yow:

Okay i think i got an idea for the story.

Maybe we could play a segment where Simon finds the car that hit him, and then tries to find the driver?

I was looking forward to finding more about the driver in the beginning of CoF (since he drove away)
But in the end when all was revealed, i was a little disappointed when nothing was revealed about the driver... if you don't count ending 5  :joebiden:

Oozing with potential, if the mod gets a featured custom campaign option, this will defienetly be on there.

So I was messing around with the wheelchair mode function, and I realized that you cannot interact with anything (pick up items, check notes etc) while in the mode. Is there a way to make this possible or will that require coding?

Thanks for all the support as well everyone :)

Since this is already partly inspiried by Silent Hill 4: The Room, I think it'd be cool if hauntings were present after going through hallucinations, or maybe the house corrupting ever so slightly.

The house part didnt take too long, about 2-3 days, but thats just because its easy to replicate things in hammer :)

Thats why there are the forums :)
Thats probably all we really need anyway. If CoF customization got big enough, we could get a Map Database site, similar to the one at www.scmapdb.com (http://www.scmapdb.com) or www.l4dmapdb.com (http://www.l4dmapdb.com) but thats probably not really necessary

Omg, how did you manage to get the Cof_Clothesmenu to work?!  :o
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 26 April, 2012, 07:44:45 PM
Its pretty straightforward.

First use an env_model. Make sure you give it a name as you will need to target it later. Set its Model to models/cutscene/simon_clothes.mdl. Set the Sequence when off to clothes1. Set the Behaviour when off to Loop. Finally go to the Flags tab and tick the following:

Initially Off

If you want, make another env_model but flip it around, so you can see Simon's back while you change his hoodie.

Next create a trigger_camera. Give it a name and give it a Target (you can set anything like ''cam_targ1'' for example). Go into the Flags tab and tick the following:

Freeze Player
Unskippable
Disable HUD
No Cam Movement
Noise Effect
(optional)

These flags are pretty self explanatory for the most part. Unskippable just prevents you from pressing Escape to exit the camera. No Cam Movement tells the camera to look straight at it's target and not move at all. Not ticking this will cause the camera to have to turn to face it's target.

Next make an info_target. This will be the entity that the camera will look at when you are changing Simon's clothes. Make sure you put it somewhere where the env_models you made will be in view. Set its Name to the same name that you specified for the Target of your trigger_camera (in my case it would have been cam_targ1).

Make your cof_clothesmenu. Give it a name. Then set the Camera entity to the name of your trigger_camera. Set the Simon entity to the name(s) of your env_models that you made.

Now that you have the entities set up. You need to make something to trigger the whole thing. Use a func_button for this. Make a door or something that resembles a closet, and then make a func_button that is the same size as the door. Place it in front of the door and then texture it with {BLUE. Set the Render mode to Solid and the Render Amount to 255. This makes the button invisible. Set the Target to the name of your cof_clothesmenu.
Finally go to the Flags and tick the following:

Don't move
Direct use only

That's pretty much it. Hopefully I didn't confuse you :)

When you are in Simon's home (between his mental episodes) you will play as Wheelchair Simon, because the story takes place about midway thru Cry of Fear while he is writing his book. When you are playing an episode you will be Book Simon however

This is probably something for the devs to answer, but I'm actually having some issues trying to get this to render in-game. I do know that its a TGA file and I've actually already named it (I just called it 640_schoolmap1.tga to follow the format of the other files). When I go in-game, the cof_billboard shows only the background, but not my TGA file. Are there any specific options I need to set in the TGA? Oh and I've already made an Alpha Channel as well. Maybe I just didn't get the formatting exactly right (8 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit?, compressed/uncompressed?)

If you want to use alpha, it needs to be a 32 bit uncompressed tga. The way to write the tga in the "Name of tga (eg: gustavdahlwelcome)" field is like so:

gfx/vgui/640_waspetgardens.tga

Quick-update, I got it working ! Thanks again James for explaining how.

I darkened it a lot to match the lights around it and also made that crappy yellow text a bit darker so you can actually read it, haha

I haven't fully considered how I am going to do that yet. But I think he will remember it in bits and pieces kind of like how he does in the original storyline. Especially in the School, maybe he'll see a flashback with him and Sophie for example

I don't think Simon would ever try & find that driver who made him crippled, because he's crippled and the story seems messed up after he commit suicide himself or something. Just my observation.  :simon:

Sorry for the lack of updates folks.
College has really sucked up so much of my time recently especially with final exams going on in the next few weeks.

Currently, I have decided to remake my school. While I DID like the way it was coming out, I just didn't feel like it captured the mood and setting I originally set out to achieve.
I've gone with a much more enclosed and stretched out design, with long and narrow hallways. I will miss my dear arches :'( but I think this is for the better.

Screenshots of that soon!

Oh and on another note, I have been trying to learn FL Studio recently so I could begin composing my own music. Even though this is a campaign for Cry of Fear, I want to use as much unique and custom content as possible without breaking the horror atmosphere that is already offered by the game. Music is a huge component of any game, but is really really important in horror games. The right music can make a world of difference and often some tracks make the game creepier because they leave a lot of things to the imagination of the player.

I made a short track in my freetime the last few days, and wanted to share it with you guys. Most likely, I will use this as the ambient while you are in the hallways of the school. Oh, and it'll be pitch black of course ;)

Check it out and let me know what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc0ukOa3a2o (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc0ukOa3a2o)

Keep in mind that this is pretty much the first thing I have ever composed in FL, and it has some issues with it, notably the various crackle sounds at some points (its not caused by YouTube). However I think it's pretty solid for a first rendition and when I played this in the hallways of the new school, it really creeped me out. You know your game is scary when it scares you and you made it, haha

Anyway keep checking back, I'll have more areas ready to show in the next week!

P.S. Going to start learning 3DS Max so I can custom animate Simon (for cutscenes) and make my own props

The track is really good, the crackles and distortions add to the effect (at least for me), making it feel more like there isn't something entirely right (which is good for horror).

Same thing happened with my mappack. The music, the darkness and atmosphere, it just makes it too stressful, even when I know that I made it and I know when a monster is coming. I can't go through that a dozen times for debugging and sometimes I have to turn off my speakers until I'm ready for the final test before release. Before I grew accustomed to it I had to not run RAD the first time.

It's more horrible if a bug scares you. The first time I tested a map that I'm currently working on, anyone know the Polis car bug? The one when you stand in top of the car, and it explodes you?, well, I was testing for some bugs to fix, I climbed over a table, got stuck and exploded, I had the volume on Max because I was listening music, now I just laugh at that bug, everytime I try the map to test some things, I kill myself before closing CoF, I'm not fixing it unless I release the map :joebiden:

Are things like lightswitches going to work? What about realistic sounds like the hum of the fridge? Or captions about props when the player tries to use them?

I don't know why, but when I see this house I think of it being an incredibly immersive and interactive experience to keep the player entertained between chapters, sort of like the one from Underhell.

One of the (hopefully) many custom items you'll obtain in Chronicles. My friend modelled this for me and I helped him texture it
If only this could be used in place of the Tree Branch, but alas that would require editing game files :(

For now it will be a usable item

P.S. Don't mind the low scale texture, the view is extremely zoomed in

(http://
http://www.volcom-mapping.com/hlmaps/rusty_pipe.jpg
)

That is very good, or I should say, very pro. I think its possible to replace the branch model unless you try to use Autodesk CAD 3DS Max and copy the Simon's hand animation and replace with this. :) Then after that, try & get James to code this in the game, if it works. :)

And btw, is this weapon the same size as the branch? Just saying.
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 28 May, 2012, 07:21:36 PM
It's a bit bigger than the branch, but the way Simon holds and swings the branch is exactly the way you would swing this pipe if it were a weapon, so it's the perfect replacement
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles

Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles

From another thread: http://www.cry-of-fear.com/forum/index.php?topic=1264.0

you must NOT edit any Cry of Fear files, only add new files. For example if you want to edit a monster, copy the monster and edit the copied monster, not the original monster.

From this I get the vibe that you can include the pipe if you make a copy of the branch, change that, and include it as a "brand new" file that won't overwrite the branch, though I may be wrong.
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Gonzo on 29 May, 2012, 01:36:42 AM
Yeah, just copy the branch and edit the copied branch with your pipe.

If I'm correct, I'm think its possible to insert this weapon without even replacing the branch model unless somebody can get this weapon in-game.
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 29 May, 2012, 10:43:48 AM
Well, in the code, the weapon_branch points to a list of specific models and sounds, so the only way I could really edit that would be to have the source code, which is not possible. Alternatively, I could replace the sound files, but that is not allowed.

We'll need to wait until a customize entity is added to the fgd before we can start putting our own weapons in

My first time compiling it and looking at it in-game. There are some issues with it like the lack of shadowing (cause the light_environment does not have the proper angles) and it seems overall too bright. But nonetheless, it is very solid performance-wise.

I'd also like to add more trees along the back part to make it blend in better with the forest skybox

You should make the light have an orange colour, and the shadow lights have a slight blue colour in your light_environment, to get the same lighting the village maps have. Right now the lighting is unnatural (as you actually stated yourself).  :yow:

Edit: Had another look, and saw you already had done it. Well it wasn't so obvious, so I suggest you change it some more. Just some pro tip for awesome lighting. ;)

Ok I got the wardrobe working. The only issue with it is that it also changes the hoodies that are hanging in the closet  :joebiden:
I'll have to get around that somehow

On another note, IAmBulletproof rigged my pipe model (from the above posts) onto Simon's hands (thanks man!!). Right now it serves as a Tree Branch replacement. Hopefully I can integrate this without overwriting files.

I recorded a little test video for it, check it out!

I'm not entirely sure why it does that, it's probably some really simple glitch you can fix.

Make copies of the original hoodie models you're using, and rename them all.
Then go into Hammer and update the location info for those new copied/custom models.

If that doesn't work, move the new copied hoodie models, or basically create a folder and place them in it.

Update entity info in Hammer.. blah blah blah.

My guess is, they won't change because the mod/engine or whatever it is will be using the originals instead of the now copied/custom new ones.

Just a guess. :P

My only con is that it uses the same collision sound, which can irritate a few people.
If there's any possibility of adding an extra hit sound, that would be perfect.

It replaces the ones in the closet because it replaces any instance of a texture with hoodie_grey as the name with the desired one. Just give the hoodies in the cupboard a different texture name.

Hey Volcomator, if you look carefully, you can see that Simon has his bag in the right side of his body, and in the mirror, it's in the left one, you can fix this by selecting the "simon_clothesm.mdl" in the mirror model. Hope that helps.

Looking neat! If possible, you should add the 'Simon Slash Breath' (like he exerts himself when striking at something), it'll make it feel a lot more dynamic to use. Felt a little weird to me that he didn't make any other sound when he does with all the other melee weapons except for the sledgehammer  :simon:

It's nice to meet another mapper who was also doing this since the age of 8. Worldcraft was such a wonderful surprise to find on that black disc, wasn't it? I'm going to provide to you a list of things you may want to look at as shown throughout your screenshots. I hope you don't mind and can respect my criticism. Due to the constant changes in environment, I will be unable to efficiently format in a 'per screenshot' basis throughout this post. Due to this, issues will be covered in multiple areas in one paragraph.

You're quite good at exterior environments. Scaling and lighting looks right. Things fit.

There are so many screenshots in this thread it is near impossible to thoroughly review them all, so I apologize if I'm missing something somewhere.

Inside of that house, the 'paper junk' model seems placed onto the floor as if that section of the floor was dedicated for it. The papers should be a bit more strategically placed around something that may potentially have papers rather than in the middle of the floor there between the two rugs. The sprites seem to be a bit too large when it comes to the fan's lights. The transparency is good, but the size is I think a bit too big. You may also want to place brushes seperating the ceiling and the walls, as the lighting discrepancy here is quite visible without them. The sprite and lighting issue is consistent throughout the house.

The brown carpet seems a bit blurry. I know we don't have the biggest choice of textures but for such an important building, I believe it deserves something a bit sharper. The room infront of the fireplace does not seem to have an appropriately placed light fixture. This means it would have to rely on the fireplace to provide lighting. You may want to put a turned off fixture here to be consistent with the design. I like the contents of the fireplace as well as the attention to the entryway. With the chairs surrounding the table, the path infront of the pictures seems a bit cramped. You may want to scooch the chair up a bit more under the table so that the player can more easily wander about it.

The depression magazine used in the kitchen seems out of place due to how dirty it is, although this may be a placeholder. The glass texture used for the doors I believe is a bit too apparent, I think it would look better if it was more transparent. The school is quite excellent and I adore your usage of architecture, especially in the upper area. However, the glass irks me with it's visibility. All of the secret rooms where the special items are stored are a bit too bright. I understand that due to the secret nature of these rooms in very potentially dark places you may be going for a popping contrast, however they seem washed out.

The helmet logo used in the blueprints image is quite large. It might be too late, but if it isn't I think it would be better if it was made smaller so the viewer can focus on the map more. The glass brightness continues to be a bit of an issue in the bathroom. Good bathroom, but the glass is distracting with it's bright, desaturating properties. The green exit sign above the later doors is quite large, you may want to make it smaller.

As I said before, the exterior areas are extremely good with a masterful application of detail.

I sincerely hope that you consider looking over these things I had brought up. Some of them are small things, but large enough for me to mention here. Keep up the good work, keep unstressed, and I'll be there when this thing is finished. Good luck.

Thanks for the criticism man, its greatly appreciated  :barry:

Actually this project just started off with me trying to replicate my own house (for fun) and then it turned into an actual project. I pretty much copied my house exactly which is why the lights are in strange spots. If I can get the time I'll try and upload some newer screenshots (its all done now). For example, that living room has been changed so that the blinds are partially up, letting in some sunlight from the outside. Its a bit more enlightened now :)

Also I can agree that the unlockables rooms are pretty bright. Maybe I'll tone down the lights and see how it looks :)

I've recently changed the school so I'm going to have to remake that map. This time around I can see about resizing the helmet.

Also the paper junk model was just kind of a placeholder to make the floor look cluttered (my actual room is pretty messy  :joebiden:) but it might be okay without it, unless I can find a better looking model or get the time to make one.

Anyway these maps are far from being "completely" done and being the perfectionist that I am, I'll probably comb through them several times before I release

Thanks for the suggestions good sir, constructive criticism only helps one to improve :joebiden:

Also, I was fiddling around with the model editor and came up with this:

Its not completely done yet, just an early render that I thought I'd share :)
Tomorrow I'll work on making the texture look a little more weathered and dirty since its pretty much the cleanest bollard that ever existed  :joebiden:

Oh and it doesnt look like the edges are straight but thats just the jpg compression

Awesome, can almost smell the woodgrain. However, the UVs have shifted to the left a few pixels it seems (always happens on compile) and you can see it with those black lines on the edges there. Simply shifting the UVs 2 pixels to the right on the reference smd and recompiling would fix this. Trivial issue though.

Hey guys just wanted to make a quick update to this.
Its not dead, of course. I was just working on an entry for the Community Collab 2, but now that that is pretty much done I can resume working on this.

I realized that this campaign is going to take me a very very long time to finish entirely, because of school, work and other irl shit that eats my time.

So I'm deciding to release this in "Episodes", the first being the city chapter, which I've now switched from Episode 2 to 1.

Maybe if I can work quick enough I'll get it into the competition but we'll see :)

Anyway I'll put up some more screenshots in the next few days, check back soon!

Hey everyone,

just a small update to the thread.

I won't be making any progress for at least 2 weeks as I am taking a vacation to Florida. When I get back though, I'm going to continue working with this campaign.

I actually have some huge plans about possibly changing this campaign. One part of me likes the idea of it being a chronicles, but I am quickly running out of ideas, and a lot of it isn't making sense and seems more like its "thrown in" than actually planned out.

So I may be changing this campaign a lot. It would probably still involve Simon but I'm not too sure about making it a chronicles

More to come soon

So instead of a history of his past in selectable chapters you'll make it more like a linear story for him?

Try & trigger cof_closeallvgui.

That's interesting. I was thinking of triggering a brief camera, setting all the disable flags, and then setting all the properties that say "keep x diabled after camera", but that probably wouldn't work as well.
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: JamesINACTIVEUSER on 20 August, 2012, 05:58:37 AM
That won't work. Everything is hidden/disabled in the nightmare map through hard-coding. IE, it's defined in the code not to display the HUD/allow sprint/inventory if you're on a map called maps/c_nightmare.bsp

However, I could add an entity to disable HUD/sprinting in 1.5 if you need it for your campaign.

Edit: However, theevina's suggestion for disabling the HUD only will work.

Edit edit: You may fake the no-sprinting by covering the entire area you don't want to be able to sprint in with a func_stairs but it's not very reliable/elegant
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 20 August, 2012, 06:53:31 AM
Ahhh okay, thanks for the clarification. A custom entity for that would definitely be awesome :D

Edit edit: You may fake the no-sprinting by covering the entire area you don't want to be able to sprint in with a func_stairs but it's not very reliable/elegant

Thats actually what I've been doing. So far it seems to work okay

I personally think it's better to disable the screen grain effect for showing screenshots as it tends to make everything look out a bit washed out and blurry and doesn't give the "true" look of the map.

Will Sophie be involved in any parts? Because she is a big part of Simons life. I wonder if she would do voice acting for CCs? Humm

I wonder the same thing here :stig: But i guess the answer will (or might) be "No".

Hey all, extremely sorry about the lack of updates
I don't mean to neglect this thread  :stig:
Lately I've been busy working with bXm on Inquietude as well as another personal project of my own.

I'm not abandoning this although I will say that I have no estimate on when I will be done.
I suppose it will be done "when it's done"

I've had a hell of a last 3 months. New place of living, no job, computer issues, etc etc

Neat! Btw, are you using the simon_talk.mdl's simon model to animate? If so, you should be able to rotate the bone "a_ogonlock" to able to make his eyes open/close. Once again, if you need an animator, just say so. I'll be glad to help out. :)

Oooo I didn't know that about the bone. I am using the player3 model though however, so I'm not sure what that means for my situation
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Burret on 20 March, 2013, 08:52:49 PM
That means you're using the one that doesn't have the bones for the eye, eyebrow & mouth model. It has to be from simon_talk.mdl.

Fucking nice work Volcomator. Glad to see you're keeping up with this.

And by the way, once CoF Stand Alone is released, you can all make mod pages for CoF, since these custom campaigns would simply become mods, just like the campaigns for Left 4 Dead are "mods". ;)

Just a nicier way than having a forum thread, I guess. We'll see how we can solve it for the future. I have good contacts with the ModDB staff, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, but a forum thread can have people easily reply and provide criticism (Or just praise your work.  :joebiden:) I'd keep the thread open along with the site, or have the guest "Chatbox" as the global "thread".

Opengl32.dll won't load anymore which means I'll have to wait until the Steam release to do any real map testing aside from making the basic layouts of the levels.

Still not working for me, sadly.
I downloaded the opengl32.dll you linked, put it in the Cry of Fear folder (And the half life one, just to be sure), put them to read only, rebooted, launched the game aaaand... darkness, flashlight isn't working. Which is kind of a shame, since I was near the end before this update borked the whole thing.

EDIT: Nevermind, moved the DLL's to the common/hl/cof folder instead of the user/hl/cof folder and that fixed it!
Hope this part might help other people who made the same mistake too!

The only problem i have, which has nothing to do with HL Beta or not, is missing lights, the lights at the ruMpel's Memories map the part with the new suicidewoman, the Train lights at the menu, intro and train scene, the rest of the lights works fine and perfectly though...

What kind of lights do the trains and the on/off lights at ruMpel's Memories map use? and what could have disabled them? And of course a solution if possible?

To answer this question, you need to put it in SteamApps/common/Half-Life

But let's try and get back on topic guys. There are various threads about this in the Technical Help section already

I posted something on moddb (http://www.moddb.com/mods/simons-book-the-chronicles/) but I'm not sure how often you check it. I probably should have just put it here in the first place.

Quote
Please forgive me if this sounds rude, because it's not intended to be that way at all.

Your work looks incredible, you really nail down the atmosphere and details perfectly. But I'm just curious, how are you doing with optimization? Don't take this in a bad way, but I cut off maybe 8 megabytes of that street map you worked on for me. Sure it was just you assisting me and you probably didn't want to spend that time and energy into that. I really did appreciate that help, really. But my computer is not the latest and greatest, and if a single collab map of yours had to be split into multiple maps which were still each bigger than the average CoF map, then I wonder how I will be able to play this one. Maybe it's because I'm OCD but I'm pretty good at doing tedious things like that. If you need any help with removing unneeded faces or grouping func_walls I'll be here. And I promise I wouldn't sacrifice any detail at all. I hope it would allow you to spend more time on what you do best.

Uhh.... every single map made for Source engine. I made a L4D2 map, and about %70 of the mapping was optimizing.
Source is and will continue to be a piece of shit to work with.
Title: Re: Simon's Book: The Chronicles
Post by: Zorbos on 11 May, 2013, 04:29:19 PM
I already answered his question on ModDB. Although I understand the genuine concern for optimization, I still feel that this campaign won't suffer from any lag issues.

For one, the maps are very very tiny, there are maybe only 1 or 2 major choke areas per level. I'd rather split the maps more often than have very large maps, as those also take a long time to load, as well as lag more.
Also, having learned how the Source toolbrushes work, I've begun using them in my HL1 maps. There are Hints and Skips in every possible location.

Look at it this way. If you can run Cry of Fear, and play through the regular SP campaign without lag, then you should be able to play Chronicles just fine. If not.. then

you might need better hardware  :yow:

Source knows what is supposed to be visible and what isn't.

Example, if you made a hollow box the outside of the box wouldn't be rendered
