Custom Campaign idea: Marble Hornets
« on: 03 May, 2013, 03:37:03 AM »
I have an idea for a custom campaign that seems to fit very well into the framework of Cry of Fear.

There are a series of Youtube videos called "Marble Hornets". I'm pretty sure that most people on this forum have seen them or at least heard of them. The primary antagonist in the videos is an entity called "The Operator" aka "Slender" or "The Slender Man". The video series is quite long and covers the exploits of several characters: Tim, Alex, Jessica, and the primary narrator. I can't remember his name right now.

Several items and weapons are featured in the videos: a pipe, a flashlight, a wrench, cellphones, a handgun, a couple of different video cameras, etc. The setting has multiple locations: the woods at Rosswood Park, a burned-out hospital, a variety of scenes in hotel rooms and creepy houses, etc.

The videos are numbered as "Entry #1", "Entry #2", and are shot in a "found footage" style with intermixed text explanations. It's creepy as all hell and very tense. The footage is not always in chronological order. Whenever anything supernatural is about to happen the sound gets very odd and there are video errors and artifacts. Some of the film is actually found as you go along.

The reason I think that an adaptation/re-interpretation of Marble Hornets would work very well in the Cry of Fear engine is that many of the elements are already present. Cry of Fear has the ability to do some of the odd video and sound effects. The inventory system and notes system would work perfectly for the story. The cell phone could be used much more extensively and Co-op mode would translate perfectly to some of the video sequences. The Marble Hornets story would probably have to be expanded a bit to add more enemies, but it could still remain an exploration/puzzle solving story.

To do this properly, it might be a good idea to contact the Marble Hornets team and make it an officially sponsored mod. It would also require a full mod team to do it right. Help from the CoF team would go a long way to making this real.

What does everyone think? I think it has a huge potential. Oh! I almost forgot. There are also David Leatherhoffesque Pills in the videos too.   :pills:

It's a damn cool idea, but no one's going to do it. Perhaps give it a shot yourself and get started with mapping? That'd be cool, I'm sure you'd make a good mapper, looking at the ideas and concepts you've typed down. :barry:

I agree with G0Idn, just do it yourself, its a good idea. Even if you're not an experienced mapper, just look up some tutorials in the forum if you ever get stuck on anything and someone will more than likely help you out.

Well, here's the issue. I never learned how to map.  :stig:

I know the basic pieces of how to get started. I'm not a complete noob, but it may take me a while to get up to speed. I'll snag Hammer and see if I can get one of the simpler areas put together, at least for the learning experience. There's a Marble Hornets video that takes place in a maintenance tunnel underneath the old hospital that should be pretty easy (and super creepy). I'll give that a try. Probably have to add some additional tunnels not shown in the video to add more playability. I'll see how far I can get.

Awesome! I remember which area you're talking about, that one would be good to start off with! Perhaps the tunnel area for a sort of beginning sequence? I could also imagine some parts of the hospital itself being re-done in Cry of Fear, just see for yourself how it'll turn out with everything though. Try not to plan too much yet, start off small and simple so it won't get too much, using Hammer can be a pain at times.

You can always PM me for any mapping help, I'd be more than happy to help you out as much as I can.

No. The story was gonna be an 'Unknown entity' chasing you, and the Slenderman thing was an easter egg ending, but somehow it evolved to the real ending. So far your death takes place at McDonalds. It's still in production, it was started about 2 months ago, and I only have about 2 maps done.

Really nice idea. I am horrible at mapping though. I'm even having trouble on my secret custom campaign I'm working on right now.

Sorry to dig up this old thread,  but I reckon this would be an awesome idea. I'd be happy to help out with the mapping and possibly music, but I wouldn't be any help with anything else. Shoot me a PM if you're still keen, we'll see if we can sort something out.

Before you go and get hammer, get the gold source version. it's the only way it'll work. trust me on that one, I had to find out the hard way, lol. sorry for diggin up an old thread. I haven't seen any new ones (other than mine) for a while. :stig:
I am the video game reaper. no other words needed.
I've coded, modded, and mapped before, but I'm a little new to VHE. I'm getting better at it, though!
