Cry of Fear complete spanish translation
« on: 15 June, 2013, 05:40:53 PM »
EDIT: DLL issue cited here has been fixed. So now I'll post news about the translation here if it's okay...

Ok, I'm kinda ashamed for asking this as I've already asked via PM to some users around here, but I think it's better to publish it here rather than being PM some user for assistance everytime. To those who've beel helping me so far via PM, my thanks. If this is the incorrect forum section for this, my apologies.

So, as the title explains, I (along with a friend I'll call pixl_man and mrpeanut188) are working a complete spanish translation for Cry of Fear, for the spanish users who have a hard time understanding english stuff (and for a friend that has me bored trying to explaining him what to do). I've only started to edit the subtitle files that come with the game but I wanted to take to a whole new level. I can safely say that transaltion is half completed by now, me and pixl_man are translating the check.tga files while mrpeanut will send me some other stuff (I feel guilty for bothering him to help me xD). Now I'm translating the in-game generated text and hopefully, this will be finished before the month ends.

I know that those in-game text are in the client.dll and hl.dll. I downloaded the CoF full russian translation to see what they did to change those texts. I discovered that the translation has a .bat files that formats the dll files and replace the texts. I tried to do it with the spanish translations and it worked... sort of. The game crashes when I use the patcher in the client.dll (says an error that it couldn't load library) and if I use it on the hl.dll it runs fine until I try to grab a syringe or dual-wield weapons. I don't know what to do to solve this matter (the originals dll files are backed-up, obviously). I just need the client.dll file to be patched properly and that should be 1 less giant blocking my path. Before patching the dll, its size is 1,168KB, after patching it changes to 1,169KB. If I'm correct, it must not surpass the original size.

Oh, I almost forgot, here are some screenshots of some of the translations:

Instead of translating "Game Over" I decided to put "You Died" in spanish as a small reference to Resident Evil.

Main menu.

Extras section.

That's the "you can't drop your phone" text translated via the patcher, meaning that it works with the hl.dll

What the translation will cover will be:
-Main Menu
-Inventory and items descrptions
-in-game generated texts
-introductions and conclusions (fixing typos as these are already made)

What will not include will be:
-Launcher (not sure how to do it and I don't wanna mess up with files that are beyond my comprehension)
-Voices (They're sacred. I'd be killing 50% of the game's magic finding someone to make a spanish voice for Simon. Plus, the team members would not allow it.)
-2D Menu
-Custom Campaigns
EDIT -Statistics and grade screen: The translated DLL lines to edit are too long and will crash the dll file, so it has been decided to keep that screen in english to prevent issues.

That's all everyone. See ya!!

Great job so far. However, any translations for Custom Campaigns will not work like the Main Single-player Campaign.

Ok, a little update of the DLL issue. It has been solved. Turns out it was my fault :stig: I made the texts to replace bigger than the ones on the DLL and thus the crashing ocurred (main reason why I prefer english as english phrases are shorter). As now I know what to do, I'll start translating stuff immediately and hopefully finish this before the end of the month. I'll post news about it here if that's okay with the developers...

*Has muerto*
Oh de verdad?! :joebiden:

Anyways, cool that you are making this, feels pretty weird that only there are subtitles in the spanish version :stig:

You should talk to Qwertyus. He was kind enough to tell me all the details about editing the game files without screw ups...

Sorry for being gone, I'll get the renders hopefully by the end of today.
You should've stopped when you lost the advantage.

Yet another update. This time: Chapter titles;

^Due to the fact that the phrase "Many Thoughts" has a long spanish translation, I've decided to put only "Thoughts" as the Chapter 10 title. As you can see, its even longer than the whole chapter title in english. Hope that the spanish users here don't mind :stig:

So Chapter 9 doesn't have an accent but Chapter 10 does?

Small typo I'll take care of :joebiden:. It was just a test to see if the spanish chapter titles worked correctly, please don't kill me for that.

Actually I've been doing the in-game text translations by myself because both pixl_man (my translator friend from Argentina) and mrpeanut188 are busy with some other stuff and I decided not to bother them for now (pixl_man is on finals on the unversity). So I made the decision to finish the in-game text translations as soon as possible. If I'm correct, I've translated half of the whole texts of the SP campaign (I translated that stuff on Fryday from 21:00 PM to 5:00 AM as I have plenty of free time). I haven't done that much yesterday and today as I was spending time with some friends (and playing CoF co-op with a friend who went all the way only with a tree branch, a nightstick and the fists...).
