Title: Paranoia
Post by: D3ads on 18 June, 2012, 04:22:50 AM
I think there's quite a few of you who haven't played it, so I'm making this up for those people.

Paranoia is a Half-Life mod single-player mod. You play a member of the Russian Federal Security Service unit spetsgruppa "Alpha". You are called to the Udarnik Industrial Complex after terrorists invade the area. The mod is entirely in Russian with subtitles in English (also in German and Spanish).

The coder for this mod created the custom renderer which was eventually used in CoF.

It's good to make people know that mod, without it CoF wouldn't be what it is ^^

I have to say, I enjoyed Paranoia. I remember I was afraid that Paranoia would become a bigger success than AoM:DC, since they both were being released at the same time, since Paranoias graphics was fucking awesome at that time.

Although, I got a bit disappointed that the Paranoia team had used so much stuff from CSCZ and HL2, and the fact that it's like 1 hour long. But nonetheless, excellent mod.

So, how did the moddb mod of the year awards go on 2007  :yow: ?

I agree .

Although i still don't understand one thing .
Isn't porting content from other games illegal ?

Paranoia used the animations and a few props from CZ:DS, the HL2 content used came from the beta.

Depends on the game, beta HL2 content can be used for anything on a non-profit basis, Valve stated this once Missing Information started using it. CZ:DS was made by a now defunct company and it's not clear who owns the copyright, even so.. no one really cares about it anymore since it's a horrible game and it's best to use the models for decent mod efforts imho.

I can't play this mod without it crashing every 15 minutes each time I open a door, whats wrong?

I would really love a fix because I want to play this excellent mod, I haven't even got to the horror part yet :(

I loved this game too when I played it. My only gripe is that it ends just when you think its starting to take off  :stig:

Haven't finished it yet, but its a pretty good mod, thought it'd be scarier though.

There are no VAC issues with any mod unless you use the Bloom mod opengl32 dll...

Are you running Windows 7? The mod came out in 2007 and it didn't exist back then so it was never tested on it, hence issues. Try compatability mode in XP, failing that.. I don't know what to suggest since the devs have all moved onto other things now.

cry of fear uses opengl32 doesn't it

It uses Paranoia's opengl32 renderer made by BuZer and you will not get banned with it. The Bloom mod opengl32.dll is completely different and will result in a VAC ban.

Same filename, different code.

ahh okay thanks for telling me this so what differs between both the codes?

Paranoia is a custom bsp renderer which adds bump mapping, specular, dynamic lighting and other things. The bloom mod... just adds horrible looking bloom to everything.

Still remember when i saw that creepy guitar guy for the first time.

He was singing in Russian, but all I heard was BRRUFFBURUFFBUCKKLEBURRFF.. WOAAHHH OWWOOH...

I remember when it was released back in 2007, indeed, I was amazed with the engines new features, I couldn't stop fucking around with the specular.
Fantastic mod, in my opinion.

Got stuck with the first encounter with the zombie things, I killed the two zombies, they took all my pistol ammo and about a hundred knife slashes and then more arrived. Then I tried just avoiding them but everywhere was a dead end. :stig:

Completed it, it truly was short. I don't get why they would go through the trouble of making all these weapons and game mechanics when the player wont even get to use them in the long run since the game ends so fast. I wish they would've stretched the levels longer, maybe a puzzle or two. :stig:

I think Paranoia works fine provided that opengl32.dll is a read-only file

^ Find opengl32.dll right click and make it read only file. :)

Congrats to D3ads for bringing this up. It deserves attention.

Aside from being way too short it's an awesome mod. Great details in maps, awesome atmosFEAR, and it uses cyrillic letters (easy for translating) :)

P. S. Oh... Companion's AI is sometimes horrible. It easily gets stuck and occasionally at the very end you can't progress because of invisible teammate that's supposed to lead you out of KROT but is stuck at a crate. You can talk to him but you can't make him move. Reloading the save game doesn't help at all. And that's in the final version... :stig: Crazy russians...

Gosh I remember this game. It was fricken amazing. I was horrified once I got into the labs. Do to how fantastic and scary the song was, and the darn banging...

P.S.

It looks like it's trying to search for hl.exe in the wrong position. Because it is just located in the 1st half-life folder, not the second. Although It could have changed, because for some reason, my Half-Life didn't convert to SteamPipe, and it still works.

Sometimes the Installation program makes this mistake: X:\games\steambidenuser\hl1\hl1\...
It creates another 'half life' folder and installs Paranoia in there, making the mod unrunable.  :joebiden: and you having 2 different 'half life' folders...
