Steam Standalone Issues
« on: 10 June, 2014, 04:01:14 AM »
Hey all,

Not sure if these forums are even checked anymore, but I figured I'd give this a go anyway.

I recently stumbled upon the standalone steam game version, and thought I would download it to give it a try. I was pretty excited to play it. Went to download it, and the download took literally one second and downloaded....absolutely nothing. What gives?

I'm running Windows 7, tried disabling the firewall on my PC, not running any anti-virus software.. I've done basically all of the troubleshooting that is suggested by Steam, and none of it has worked. I've seen a few help threads about the issue in general, but all of them are resolved by "manually installing" the files that were downloaded, etc. My Steam downloaded literally nothing, so I don't know what to do from here. I've uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled, etc a few times and nothing is working.

Happy to answer any questions if you need more info to try to help..

-Justin

What happens when it "installs"? Is the name of it in the game library grey, white, or yellow? Is the play/install button still labeled play or install, or is it just gone entirely? If the play button is there, what happens when you press it?

Hmm well your quick download raises some suspicion. First off, did you download it from steam? If no, go do it.

If yes, then is it in your game list? If no then something went wrong, try redownloading it or verifying the steam cache.

If you have done all these things, does it crash upon launch? Do you get to the start menu of the game before the actual launch takes place?

I tried to be thorough in my description, but realized based on your responses that I wasn't even close. Haha..

I installed from Steam directly, yes. When it "downloaded" there was no issue. It simply downloaded quickly, and upon checking my
C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Cry of Fear/
folder, I found.... quite literally nothing, an empty folder.

Upon the "completed" download, the game was showing as "in my library". Same as the rest of my downloaded games. Clicking it gives the error message that there is a "missing executable" (rofl, really? folder is empty...).

The first troubleshooting I did was to verify the game files cache, and that returned... nothing! It said everything was installed and correct, no game files missing etc. ...? So next I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Same outcome as the first download. I've tried restarting Steam, my computer, deleting the Cry of Fear folder entirely and reinstalling (as it didn't seem to delete the folder on uninstall), and a few other things like disabling my firewall and a few programs Steam suggests you disable if you're having install issues with games. None of the above has worked, and I'm really at a loss as to what the problem is or why my computer fails to see that there is a problem aside from a missing executable when it tries to run the game.

Hopefully that gives a little more insight, but if any more is needed I'm happy to provide further insight if possible. I guess screenshots would be the next step of showing what is happening, but a screenshot of an empty folder that is supposed to contain game files doesn't do much good beyond showing I'm not making it up.

side note: I had a friend install it on her computer/Steam and she had no issue with it. So it's something on my end. (and it also reaffirmed it should not be a 1kb download, but rather a 2.3GB or so dl, heh)

The only solution I can think of is very basic, but it'll definitely work.
You could try getting a 5 GB or greater flash drive, (Cry of Fear is somewhere around 4 GB of memory.) and use it to transfer the files of the game from your friend's computer to your computer.
