Custom campaign I'm working on: "The Nightmare Continues"
« on: 11 February, 2015, 11:36:00 PM »
Story: This is following the Simon you play as throughout the main campaign, and it takes place in the "book world."
Simon hadn't found anyone at home, only an odd book. as soon as he picked it up it things changed, things went weird, and he blacked out. now he awakens and has to find his way out and figure out what exactly this book is, and what it can do.
Intro:
"I got home, only to find nothing except a book. In the book is what looks like my handwriting, but I don't remember writing this. After I started to read, things started...happening. I remember a little more now. I got hit by the car, got taken to the hospital and...that's all. But I remember the hospital I was taken to, Markland Hospital. I have to find out what is going on...I wonder if this nightmare will ever end."
Concept: With the book in your possession (not the one you unlock by getting S Rank, it's like a key that is always returned that's used on certain doors. you'll know them by the text: "It won't budge...Touching it makes me feel very uneasy.")
I already have a couple images from the first 2 maps you play through:
Map 1:
Map 2:
Note: I'm not giving away everything. this is what I have so far.
Tell me what you think of the idea, and any suggestions and help you can give would be much appreciated. Since I can't make cutscenes (don't have the right software), if there's anyone willing to help me out with that, I'd be very happy. Thanks in advance, and hopefully this campaign can become all I want it to be! It's my first campaign, but I'm not new to mapping. just new to Valve Hammer mapping. but I've pretty much figured it out.
On another note, the campaign will include random spawns of Book Simon, and will have bosses you've never fought before but that had been encountered in the main campaign, such as one that was originally meant to be a boss (as said in the developer commentary) but was instead made into something else. Wish me luck with this campaign, and I hope you like the concept at least.

Edit: I'm planning on having at least 10 maps.
Edit 2: I've been away a while, but I'm back with more motivation to finish this CC. I have been a little busy with life, but now I'm going to focus as much on this campaign as I can. The fact spring break has started for college makes this much easier, too. So now that I have much more time on my hands (even if only for a week) I'll be able to finish a lot more.
I had an idea for boss fight with Book Simon, and when I thought about the original idea I figured I needed to make it more sudden and much more of a surprise. But I didn't want it to be as much of a pain to beat-and make-as the original idea. I won't talk about the original idea cause I'm still going to use some parts of it in the new idea.

I am the video game reaper. no other words needed.
I've coded, modded, and mapped before, but I'm a little new to VHE. I'm getting better at it, though!

Sounds neat!
I like the idea of the book being a permanent key.
Are you surprised when sentences don't end as you potato?

I thought that would be a cool way to use the book. glad I'm not the only one! unfortunately, though, the project is currently at a stand-still cause I've got a lot of work on my plate right now. I will finish it eventually. but real life comes first, as one of my favorite twitch streamers says.
Btw, off the topic of this campaign, do you know how to get the AoM ending that involves the god door, cause I am stumped. :stig:
I've gotten the ending where he hangs himself and the ending where the police arrive at his house, but can't figure out the other ending.

I dunno, never beat AoM. Spring break Is coming up, though.  :yow:
I should have time for it then.

BTW, thanks for spoiling 2 of the endings to a game I've never beaten.  :stig:

JK, it's all good. But yeah, if I find out how to get that ending, I'll let you know. Keep up the good work :D

Oh, sorry about that. I thought that everyone but me had beaten it with all endings by now.
and thanks. I hate how people on the "walkthroughs" have to be so vague about how to get the endings. it's annoying.

So, I'm back to mapping. Life got a little much for a little while, but I'm going to finish this CC if it kills me! Not really, cause that would be bad. But I'm going to finish it.
Thanks to ZikShadow's and Anterly's comments in my other thread, I've decided to focus on this one first and to tone down my ambitious ideas. I need to be able to finish them, and it needs to be possible to finish them. I'd like to thank them again for their criticisms, they were much appreciated.
Anyway, I've had a lot of ideas while I was busy and I've figured out what I can and can't do. Wish me luck!

Judging by the amount of screenshots and information given, please post more of em if you can. I admire your confidence that you won't give up on your custom campaign, but still lack of progress shown over here to convince that you'll pull it off.

Before I end this message, I'll give you some advice for VHE & "horror" genre mapping.

  • Reduce the amount of spooky "white text with black-ish background" in your maps if you can. Otherwise, it'd be just like AoM's nightmare levels.
  • Photoshopping textures, etc is necessity for mapping as well, if you have the right software & skills for it.
  • Be creative in jumpscares.
  • Must have great knowledge of the functions in VHE of Half-Life 1. Try here! http://twhl.info/
  • Must have great knowledge of editting 3D Models.

Speaking of custom campaign, I haven't even posted new shits for my campaign, yet. I'll just leave this here; :stig:

Yeah, I was actually considering scrapping that part and making it truly start immediately after Simon finds the book. I was thinking of improving it by changing the textures and maybe making it longer and with less of a chase feel. But I did want to keep the padded room at the beginning.
Also, I look forward to that CC you're working on. It looks like it'll be amazing!
